Cell phones transforming Africa!

The use of cell phones in some countries in Africa is transforming the continent in a remarkable way.  In Kenya, for example, M-Pesa, the popular mobile phone money transfer system is probably a world first! Xan Rice reporting for the The Guardian, Tuesday 20 March 2007 observed that M-Pesa, (mobile money) service is expected to revolutionise banking in a country where more than 80% of people are excluded from the formal financial sector. MIT researcher Nathan Eagle says “Kenya has some mobile phone services that are years ahead of what we have right now,”(Read article by Janko Roettgers here...) and recently BBC reported How text messages can help fight malaria as a pilot scheme in Nigeria and Ghana aimed at determining genuine medicines through text messages kicks off. (BBC 14 December 2010). These are just a few examples of how cell phones innovations are transforming Africa.
