Kenya leads global mobile money industry

July 19, 2012

Kenya’s Mobile Money industry is growing fast as the country tops the global share of mobile money subscribers at 47.5 per cent, according to the latest report: ‘Information and Communications for Development 2012: Maximising Mobile‘.

The World Bank is questioning the mobile money monopoly  calling it “unfair” and urging further regulation for fair competition. (The star: http://www.the-star.co.ke/business/local/85692-mobile-money-monopoly-unfair-says-wb).

While I agree that proper regulations to counter monopoly are imperative, Kenya’s M-Pesa has truly excelled as the most innovative and effective mobile money system that has rapidly transformed the lives of millions of people, small and medium entrepreneurs.

Wireless internet connection via Safaricom, Kenya’s leading mobile network operator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safaricom). Internet connectivity in Kenya is quite reliable though a bit slow in the villages.
